Hosted by Chartered Secretaries Southern Africa in partnership with the JSE Limited, the Annual Report Awards have been rewarding excellence in corporate reporting since 1956.  The Institute pioneered these types of awards,  which have become more widespread in recent years.  In 2005 the scope of the awards was extended to include Annual Reports from non-government organisations and State entities.  In addition to South African entrants, entries are received from other African countries, including Botswana, Swaziland and Namibia.

The Awards offer an opportunity for a peer-on-peer comparison and measure of good corporate governance and risk management practices.  The primary objective of the Awards is to encourage accurate and transparent financial reporting and full disclosure of all relevant information to stakeholders.  The more than 10% year-on-year increase in entries over the past five years indicates the growing emphasis placed on Annual Reports as a communication tool.  

Business Day is the media partner of the Awards, providing a platform for the call for entries.  These are on a voluntary basis, with companies electing to submit their annual reports to the panel of judges.  This comprises independent judges from the Institute, the JSE and Business Day.  Each judge individually assesses the reports against the stringent criteria, ensuring that there is no collusion on the adjudication.
